Why we think this is a classy wine to drink

The Yangarra GSM (Grenache-Shiraz-Mourvedre) 2017 is a 95 point Grenache blend from its Australian homeland in McLaren Vale and made by the highly acclaimed winery, Yangarra. Made biodynamically from 70 year old Grenache vines and younger Shiraz and Mourvedre, this Yangarra wine was aged for 10 months in old oak barrels to gently settle the wine but leave it focused on the fruit, not oak.

Bright and perfumed with chewy earth and spice characters. The careful blend selection in this 2017 Yangarra GSM shows a great example of evenly spread flavours of red fruits, blackberry and some spice, and beautifully meshed tannin. The Yangarra GSM will reward today or over years with cellaring.

About The Winery

Yangarra Estate is a biodynamic winery in Kangarilla in the McLaren Vale. Planting here first happened in 1946 when the property was called Laila Rookh ("love nest"). Bernard Smart, still living on Yangarra, helped his father plant the High Sands vineyard with Grenache bush vines. In 2001, the property was purchased by Jess Jackson and Barbara Banke who were looking for a world-class Shiraz and Grenache vineyard.

The Yangarra philosophy centres around producing wines from the single-vineyard estate, where the bush-vine Grenache is the keystone variety. With McLaren Vale having one of the best "Mediterranean" climates Yangarra Estate is devoted to producing wines from the best grape varieties of the southern Rhone in France. Yangarra’s combination of rare geologies, moderate altitude, abundant sunshine and cool evening breezes make it perfect for growing varieties that thrive in these moderate maritime environments.

Today there are 100 hectares of vineyards at Yangarra across 35 individual blocks. Grenache, Shiraz, Mataro, Cinsault, and Carignan are the key red varieties while Roussanne and Viognier are the major white varieties. Developing plantings of Tempranillo, Graciano, Terret noir, Vaccarèse, Counoise, Muscardin, and Piquepoul noir are completing the red varietal roster, with plantings of Bourboulenc, Clairette and Picpoul blanc filling out the white side.
