Why we think this is a classy wine to drink

Fruity Floral Red Fruits Cherry Raspberry

  • From the famed Te Mata Estate in Hawke's Bay, NZ comes this divine Beaujolais and Pinot Noir alternative.
  • Te Mata is considered New Zealand's "First Growth" winery up there with the best of France.
  • Perfect on the patio over Spring and Summer, this is an entertainer's wine. Great with lighter meals, think pizza, pasta or simple white meat dishes.
  • Must compare to Beaujolais or Pinot Noir. This elegant easy-drinking Gamay exudes juicy confected cherry, raspberry, strawberry and toffee-apple flavours.
  • Rated 17.5 points by Raymond Chan for the 2016 vintage.

About The Winery

The Te Mata Estate was originally part of Te Mata Station, a large pastoral land-holding established in 1854. The vineyards were first planted in 1892. The property was purchased by its current family owners, the Buck and Morris families, in 1974 and underwent a 20 year upgrade programme.

Today Te Mata Estate comprises 3 different sets of vineyards: Havelock Hills, Woodthorpe and Bridge Pa Triangle. All in Hawke's Bay.

Te Mata has five sites in the southern Havelock Hills area: the famed Cabernet and Merlot vineyards of Awatea, Elston and Coleraine. These were first planted in 1896. Planted in 1994, the north-west Woodthorpe vineyards produces Viognier and Gamay Noir as single-vineyard wines, and includes the largest plantings of Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Sitting in the warmer centre of Hawke's Bay are two vineyards in Bridge Pa Triangle. The Bullnose vineyard, planted in 1990 with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Sauvignon Gris, and the Isosceles vineyard which was planted in 2000 with Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah, Semillon and Cabernet Franc.

Te Mata Estate is recognised as one of New Zealand’s most prestigious wine producers, making nearly 40,000 cases a year of premium wine annually.
