Why we think this is a classy wine to drink

Oak Smoke Tobacco Leather Black Cherry Plum Cassis Blackcurrant Black Fruits

  • One of the top wines of the premium "Cru Bourgeois" wine classification from the legendary left bank of Bordeaux and from the excellent 2016 vintage. This vintage was rated 98 points by Wine Enthusiast and 97 points by Wine Spectator magazine.
  • Awarded 92 points by both Tim Atkin MW and Jane Anson for Decanter, as well as 91 points by James Suckling and Wine Enthusiast magazine.
  • 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, and aged for 12 months in French oak barrels (25% new). A deep inky colour with a pure, ripe, fruit-intense nose. Plenty of cassis and black currants, cedar and tobacco in its flavours. A mineral taste is suggestive of Grand Cru Classé caliber. The ripeness matches well with sweet tannin and guarantees its cellaring potential. A truly classic vintage for La Tour de By.
  • Tim Atkin MW notes: "A delicious, stylish wine at what is usually a very reasonable price, this is a lovely, nuanced, restrained claret that is very assured and well balanced. Long and refreshing, with polished tannins, succulent berry fruit, smoky oak and a tangy, refreshing finish."
  • Jane Anson for Decanter commented: "this is a gorgeous, rich, powerful and balanced wine. It was only bottled in June 2018 and yet it's already tasting brilliant. It has silky tannins but is full of power and flesh, with utterly gorgeous black fruits. This is a wine that you would like to have thrilled in your cellar; delicious! 25% new oak."
  • This wine is a meat lover's paradise as its richness, tannin and acid helps deal with the strongest of meats, or hard mature cheese.
