Three Portuguese Wine Producers You Need to Know
The fact that Portuguese wine is often looked over is actually quite a handy thing for all of us who love sensational wines at a great value. With a host of local grape varieties, unique terroirs, and talented winemakers, Portugal offers the answer to the question, 'What wines should I be drinking'?
Not entirely sure where to start? We've highlighted a few producers to get you started on your Portuguese wine journey.
Based in the heart of Portugal's famed Douro Valley, Vilalva is a prime example of just how good dry Portuguese wines can be. For anyone who has had the opportunity to try these wines, it comes as no surprise that Vilalva picked up the Wine Producer of the Year award back in 2012.
The estate's wines continue to impress vintage after vintage, with recent bottlings earning awards from Decanter and the International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC). Our favourite wine in Vilalva's outstanding line-up is the intensely concentrated Touriga Nacional Reserva, a masterclass in high-quality dry Portuguese red wine. Full of loads of ripe blackberry, plum, black cherries, and spice, if you're partial to fruity reds with a little ageing potential, this wine is definitely for you. Bring it to a barbecue or enjoy it with a hearty stew.
Catedral comes to us courtesy of Caves Velhas, a stellar brand whose doors first opened back in 1881. As one of the oldest and largest producers in Portugal, Caves Velhas has established a brilliant reputation which extends to the smaller labels under the brand's umbrella. And yes, this most certainly includes Catedral. If you're a red drinker, it's well worth your time to check out the Catedral Dão Tinto Reserva. It's a heady blend of Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional, and Alfrocheiro, a local grape with vibrant acidity and beautiful berry flavours. This award-winning Tinto Reserva is the perfect red to show off your excellent taste in wine at your next family get together or dinner with friends.
Vinha do Fava
The Freitas family of Casa Ermelinda Freitas is behind the stunning Vinha do Fava label. The vineyards are located in the Peninsula de Setúbal, immediately to the south of Portugal's spectacular capital city, Lisbon. The Vinha do Fava line includes a complex, richly fruity Touriga Nacional, a Tinto made from the wonderful local Castelao grape, as well as a lively white and rosado. Each of these wines is a testament to the high standards and phenomenal quality you can expect from the Freitas family. Quality that has earned this family over 60 Gold medals in the past 10 years for their wines - that is almost unheard of!
Whether you're looking to sample new grape varieties, love expressive, fragrant wines with plenty of flavour, or are searching for a crowd-pleasing wine to satisfy a group with diverse tastes, trust us, Portugal has you covered.
